Sketchbook Play

Sketchbook studies
There is plenty of work to do in the studio, but on this rainy morning, I chose sketchbook play, wherein I am not making art for anyone but me. I am playing … Sometimes, play produces unexpected findings or resolutions. This morning might be such a time.

I told myself I was going to do small acrylic studies on my favorite color story: quinacridone magenta, green gold and titan buff with turquoise for a discordant color. I danced a big brush on all of these pieces, which were on one piece of big paper. Next, I cut each little painting so it could have its own voice. I collaged a little asemic writing into each and then, I went to town, working each piece a little at a time.

Working fast and loose, guided only by intuition, I noticed a story start to emerge. I saw a lily pond in two of them. So … little, loose lily ponds became a goal and each became its own microcosm of marks and brushstrokes.
These might be nothing more than sketchbook additions with notes to self. Or they might become guides for a big series in oil or pastel or mixed media. It's the journey that matters.

I'll leave you with a quote from Alvaro Castagnet (look him up. I love his work). “Painting is an illusion. Art is inside.”
